The Cauchy-Poisson problem

The "classical" Cauchy-Poisson problem of the fluid response to an initial disturbance of the free surface has an explicit solution. This animation of that solution shows the surface of a finite portion of the infinite fluid domain. As noted in the page on dispersion, the long-wave components of the disturbance propagate away most quickly, although you may have to stop the animation to see this.
