Scattering by an array

A plane sound wave is incident from the left on an array of rigid scatterers. Multiple scattering within the array generates a wave field that propagates to the far field. Particularly prominent are the "near" plane waves that propagate towards the top and bottom left corners. Despite the fact that this is a 3x3 array, the directions of propagation are predicted very closely (in a very simple way) by considering an array that extends to infinity in both "vertical" directions. The directions of propagation predicted by the infinite array are marked on the right-hand figure.
