Health
and safety information
This page provides access to important health and safety information
about the Expeditions Society.
It is an objective of the Expeditions Society is facilitate the development
in its members of skills useful in an expeditions context. We do not exist
to teach, and are not qualified to do so. It is expected that members will
benefit from the experience and knowledge of their peers, but members should
satisfy themselves that any guidance they receive is correct. Society activities
are undertaken as groups of peers with no member assuming responsibility
for others. Individual members are at all times responsible for: their
own safety; ensuring that their actions do not endanger themselves or others;
and ensuring they have an appropriate level of experience for their planned
activity.
The Expeditions Society is run in accordance with the British
Mountaineering Council's Club
Guidance Notes (external link).
A suggested kit list for a weekend trip is available.
All members of the Expeditions Society must sign to say they

Health and safety information sheet
This safety information has been produced voluntarily by the club
as a result of recent pressure on University outdoor clubs throughout the
country to have a greater emphasis on safety. It is to your advantage to
take notice of its contents. Please read this information carefully.
-
All outdoor pursuits involve a certain element of danger, and for many
people this is part of their attraction. Whilst the Society will take all
reasonable precautions to operate safely, members should realise and accept
that even with these precautions OUTDOOR PURSUITS INVOLVE A RISK OF
PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH. By signing as a member, you are accepting
this risk.
-
Members should also be aware that one of the aims of the society as stated
in the constitution is "to undertake trips to wilderness areas for participation
in outdoor pursuits, such as might develop skills useful to expeditions".
We are not, however, an instructional facility. It is our aim to provide
members with opportunities to undertake activities and provide guidance,
but not to teach.
-
The club accepts no liability for any loss, inconvenience, damage or injury
sustained to person or property, whilst engaging in any activity with the
club and its committee.
-
The committee reserve the right to disallow any member from taking part
in and Society activity if they feel that the person may be a source of
danger or liability to themselves or any other person.
-
During Society trips, members are expected to have their activities agreed
by a member of the committee or person appointed by the committee, before
commencing that activity. Details of activities must be written down and
left with a committee member and must contain enough information to be
of use to the relevant rescue services. Forms for this purpose will be
available from the committee or trip organiser.
-
By signing up for an activity organised by the Society, you are signing
that you consider yourself fit to undertake that activity.
-
Members are expected to provide themselves with adequate and appropriate
clothing for any Society activity. JEANS ARE NOT APPROPRIATE. Members
will not be allowed to leave on a trip if they only have jeans with them.
If you are in any doubt about what constitutes appropriate clothing, please
ask a member of the committee.
