CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECTS

In May 2010, Dr Ryley was awarded the 3-year EPSRC ‘DRT for DRT: Developing Relevant Tools for Demand Responsive Transport’ project.  A project website, at www.drtfordrt.org.uk, has just been developed. Also see the recent Press Release: http://www.lboro.ac.uk/service/publicity/news-releases/2010/167_DRT.html. He will be working on the research project with his Loughborough University colleagues Dr Marcus Enoch, Dr Mohammed Quddus, Dr Lisa Davison and Dr Chao Wang.

In 2009, Dr Ryley was a member of research teams that were awarded 3 EPSRC projects relating to travel behaviour.  He is leading the ‘ABC project’ (http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/ViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/H003398/1), examining airport surface access (with Cranfield University & University of Leeds) – see the EPSRC Press Release: http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/newsevents/news/2010/Pages/goodbyethegreenway.aspx.  This is one of a series of projects awarded that relate to environmental airport operations.  A further environmental airport operations project, for which I am Co-Investigator, is the ‘Airport Energy Technologies Network’ (http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/ViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/H003150/1).  The third project awarded (as Co-Investigator) is Future Resilient Transport Networks ‘FUTURENET’ (http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/ViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/G060770/1), a large inter-disciplinary project with a number of academic and stakeholder partners.  It examines the transport network aspects as one of a series of projects relating to Adaptation and Resilience to a Changing Climate (ARCC). His role in FUTURENET and the ABC project relates to travel behaviour; in each project Dr Ryley will manage a travel behaviour survey of at least 2,000 respondents and incorporate discrete choice analysis and segmentation methodologies.

PREVIOUS RESEARCH PROJECTS

His three most recent research projects are summarised below.

1. The ‘Propensity to Fly’ project (November 2006 – April 2009)

Dr Tim Ryley was the Principal Investigator of the 30-month EPSRC ‘Propensity to Fly’ project, which examines individual responses to low cost air travel in the East Midlands, using stated choice models and segmentation techniques.  Dr Lisa Davison was the Research Associate on the project. See the project summary for further information. There was much media interest in the ‘Propensity to Fly’ project findings. For instance see the following article published in the Guardian (5-10-09): http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/oct/05/british-public-flights-carbon-footprint.

2. The INDICATOR project (October 2007 – June 2008)

Dr Tim Ryley was the Principal Investigator of the EPSRC ‘INDICATOR’ project, concerned with ‘International and National Developments In Collaborations relating to Air Travel and Operational Research’.  The nine-month project started in October 2007 and includes collaboration with key US stakeholders in air travel and operational research; see the project summary for further information.

3. The ‘Public engagement on aviation taxes’ project (March 2007)

Dr Tim Ryley was the Principal Investigator of the 'Public engagement on aviation taxes' project, commissioned by the Sustainable Development Commission.  The project, based on four focus groups in Loughborough, was conducted during March 2007.  The overall objective of the ‘Public engagement on aviation taxes’ study was to deepen understanding of the arguments around the acceptability of current and potential future aviation taxes.
