Current research

Channels in agricultural landscapes and their roles in hydrology, soil erosion and nutrient losses in potato production systems of Eastern Canada - Rene is working in collaboration with the PI Dr Li Chen at the Potato Research Centre, Agriculture and Agri Food Canada to help to fill the knowledge gap on the initiation and development of channels and the impacts of channels on hydrology, soil erosion and nutrient transportation at the plot-, field- and watershed-scales. As part of the project, photogrammetric data will be used to characterise the effect of rainfall and snowmelt erosion for potato production systems of Eastern Canada.


Freeform construction - Large scale additive manufacturing for construction - Rene is working in collaboration with Dr R. Buswell to investigate the accuracy in the object space of a freeform construction machine situated in the Civil & Building Engineering Laboratory at Loughborough University. A laser scanning approach will be used to compare a 'printed' model with the original design data.

Past projects

NERC Project: Capturing all fresh information on the Zhouqu landslide disaster, in the Gansu province of China that took place on the 8th August 2010 - Rene was working in collaboration with the PI Dr Tom Dijkstra, Co-I Professor Jim Chandler and Dr Enoc Sanz Ablanedo at Loughborough in conjunction with the British Geological Survey and the University of Portsmouth to adopt a scientific approach to collect data, verify their robustness, make impartial observations and develop reliable process models which will be essential to develop appropriate mitigation strategies for the future. Images of the area were used to extract digital elevation models and orthophotos which were initially used for a mapping programme.

Comparing low cost photogrammetry and laser scanning for accurate spatial measurement and representation of building fabric - Rene is PI on a RICS funded project (November 2009 - November 2010) to compare the accuracy achievable using laser scanning and photogrammetry for close range surveying and monitoring of structures and building fabrics. The study will answer the question: "What is the most suitable technique for specific measurement tasks in the construction environment in terms of data acquisition, data processing and costs effectiveness?" This funded project is being conducted through collaboration with Jim Chandler at Loughborough.


Car crash investigation - a collaboration (Rene and Jim Chandler) with the Crash crash_carInvestigation Manager, Rob Newton, at the Transport Safety Research Centre, Loughborough University has been established to investigate the effect of side and frontal impacts on cars. A terrestrial laser scanner is being used to quantify deformations that have occurred by comparing crashed areas with unaffected zones.

Spatial measurement with consumer grade digital cameras - Rene has developed the potential of consumer grade digital cameras for accurate spatial measurement in his PhD Thesis. An approach is introduced to assess camera stability based on comparing the accuracy in the reconstructed object space. This study also identified residual systematic error surfaces and a methodology that uses a mildly convergent image configuration was developed, which removes these systematic errors. This methodology can reduce the need for an accurate lens model and effectively increase the accuracy achievable with non-metric digital sensors.
