My Research Areas

My primary research interests lie in the processes underlying the formulation and implementation of transport policy.

In particular, I am interested in 'mobility management' measures – i.e. measures that aim to manage car use more effectively. The reason is that while car use can be a major benefit to the lives of individuals, excessive levels of car use can cause significant economic, social and environmental problems for society as a whole.

Consequently, my research is divided into three:

  1. Policies aimed at reducing car use (e.g. through parking measures, various forms of transport taxes and travel plans).

  2. Policies aimed at improving alternatives to the car (e.g. through improving support for bus services, Demand Responsive Transport systems, and car clubs).

  3. Finally, I have an interest in looking at transport systems and policies at a macro level, in particular through studies of islands such as Mauritius, Cuba, Malta, Singapore and Japan.
