The Static! project, developed by the Interactive Institute, aimed to
investigate how interaction design could increase users awareness of how
energy is used in order to stimulate changes in user behaviour. Several
products were prototyped as part of the Static! project, one of which
was the Flower Lamp.
The Flower Lamp
reflects its energy usage by changing its shape. When power
consumption is low, it rewards the user by unfolding its metal petals.
If too much electricity is used it closes up again.
"To make the lamp more beautiful, a change in behaviour is needed"[1]
You can find further examples of products designed to raise
awareness of energy use on the Static! website
