disappearing pattern-tiles

The Static! project, developed by the Interactive Institute, aimed to investigate how interaction design could increase users awareness of how energy is used in order to stimulate changes in user behaviour.

Several products were prototyped as part of the Static! project, one of which was the Disappearing Pattern-Tiles.

The Disappearing Pattern-Tiles act as a subtle yet effective reminder of energy and water use. Decorated with heat-sensitive thermo-chromic ink, these highly patterned tiles communicate heat loss generated during prolonged showering visually by fading over time, the longer one showers the less decoration on the tiles.

You can find further examples of products designed to raise awareness of energy use on the Static! website http://www.tii.se/static/index.htm
