design I behaviour: making it happen! workshop

The 13th Sustainable Design Network seminar 'Design I Behaviour: Making it Happen!' was held on Friday 17th October 2008 at the Engineering Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (engCETL) at Loughborough University. This event followed on from the first Design I Behaviour workshop by exploring how design can influence behaviour and the ethical implications of designing products to encourage more sustainable use.

You can download copies of the presentations given at this event by following the links below. MP4 video files of the presentations can be accessed through the links shown (these files play in Quicktime). Please let me know if you have any problems viewing the films (e-mail debra).

Dr Vicky Lofthouse, Co-ordinator of the Sustainable Design Network - "Welcome"
Vicky introduced the Sustainable Design Network to new members and provided an overview of how the field of Design for Behavioural Change has evolved since the 2006 workshop (Design I Behaviour).

Roseliek van de Velden, Innovaders (Netherlands) - "Globe ball: Investigating unsustainable behaviours". In this warm-up activity participants introduced themselves by throwing and catching a globe and at the same time found out how their daily behaviour or habits influences sustainability.

Dr Vicky Lofthouse, Loughborough University - "Design | Behaviour - setting the context" Vicky presented the background to the development of the Design-Behaviour website, reflected on feedback received by users and outlined future developments planned. <watch Vicky's presentation>. For more information see "about us" or <Read the report>

Tang Tang, Loughborough University - "Creating Sustainable Behaviour: An exploration of environmental impacts of household cold appliance use"
Tang presented findings of user centred research exploring the impacts associated with the use of fridge-freezers and outlined potential design solutions to change user behaviour. <Read Tang's abstract> <watch Tang's presentation>.

Ed Elias, University of Bath - “Behaviour Driven Design”  Ed provided an overview of the work being done to develop a Behaviour Driven Design Methodology for improving the energy efficiency of products during use, by studying user behaviour's and designing the products to them. <Read Ed's abstract> <watch Ed's presentation>.

Roseliek van de Velden, Innovaders (Netherlands) - "Designing to Change Behaviour: A Practical Approach" (presentation not available). Roseliek provided an overview of Innovaders research and development processes and introduced some of the products Innovaders have designed which influence user behaviour to reduce environmental impacts. For more information visit: www.innovaders.nl/

Dan Lockton, Brunel University - "Design for Sustainable Behaviour: Easier Efficiency by Influencing Interaction"  Dan introduced "Design with Intent" and discussed how these techniques could be applied to environmental problems where user behaviour is a significant factor - helping people use everyday products and systems more efficiently. <Read Dan's abstract> <watch Dan's presentation>.

Dr Debra Lilley, Loughborough University - "Exploring the ethics of design for behavioural change"  Debra introduced a product design scenario to illustrate some of the ethical issues which may result from products designed to change user behaviour and drew on emerging literature to discuss potential ethical analysis tools.  <Read Debra's abstract> <watch Debra's presentation>.

Dr Debra Lilley, Loughborough University - "Ethical analysis of behaviour changing products" In this hands-on group activity the participants investigated and discussed some of the ethical issues which may arise from deliberate intervention by designers to influence user behaviour.
