Consumer behaviour contributes significantly to
society’s impact on the environment. Through products, designers can
shape consumption activities and bridge the intention - behaviour gap
between values and everyday user actions. Design for sustainable
behaviour is an emerging activity under the banner of sustainable
design which aims to reduce the environmental and social impacts of
products by moderating users’ interaction with them.
'design-behaviour' is a resource specifically developed to raise
awareness of design for sustainable behaviour and to support designers
and engineers in applying DfSB strategies in their teaching, practice
and research.
The content of this website
builds on the doctoral findings of Dr Debra Lilley and research carried out
by the Sustainable Design Research Group, Loughborough Design School.
It is not intended to be viewed as a
"how to" guide but as a starting point to spark ideas and promote
discussion. You can use this site to find information about Design for
Sustainable Behaviour (DfSB) and learn how others have applied DfSB
strategies in practice.
Bear in mind that Design for Sustainable Behaviour (also known as "Design
with Intent") is not an absolute
proven science but an evolving theory so please feel free to contribute to
or even disagree with the ideas presented in this website by e-mail to
